Year 9 Mathematics

The year 9 curriculum is based on the National Strategy. The year is broken into modules each lasting approximately two weeks. The year 9 modules are:  

Autumn Term

 
Algebra 1/2
Sequences, Functions and Graphs
Sequences, Mappings and inverse functions, Real-life functions and graphs
Number 1
Proportional Reasoning
Add, subtract, multiply, divide fractions, Percentage changes, Proportion, Ratio, Multiplying by numbers between 0 and 1, Order of operations, Estimation and approximations
Algebra 3
Solving Equations
Roles of letter symbols, Solving linear equations (unknown on both sides), Trial-and-improvement
SSM 1
Geometrical Reasoning
Conventions, definitions & derived properties, Interior/exterior angles, Regular polygons, Circle properties, Constructing RHS triangles, Loci
Handling Data 1
The Handling Data Cycle
Discrete & continous data: Surveys, Sampling, Averages, Scatter graphs, Line graphs for time series, Comparing two distributions, Communicating results

 

 

Spring Term

Perimeter, Volume and Area
Mid-points of line segments, Pythagoras, Circumference & area of circles, Measurements and area/volume conversions, Surface area and volume of right prisms
Number 2
Number Calculations
Multiplying/dividing by powers of 10, Rounding & estimating, Add, subtract, multiply, divide decimals of any size, Calculator methods
Algebra 4
Number Properties and Graphs of Functions
Properties of number, Prime factorisation, Indices & index laws, Graphs of linear equations, Real-life graphs
Handling Data 2
Probability
Probability, Listing outcomes, Experimental probabilities, Add, subtract, multiply, divide fractions
SSM 3
Transformations
Congruence, Ratio in SSM context, Scale drawings, Transformations

 

 

Summer Term

 
Algebra 5
Equations, Functions and Formulae
Factorising, Substitution, Deriving formulae & rearranging, Generating points for linear functions stated implicitly in terms of x
Revision
Preparation for the SAT exams in May.
Begin GCSE Course
Students start the Edexcel Two Tier GCSE Course with the Handling Data module. This will be followed with Handling Data Coursework in the first half term of year 10.
