Science is a compulsory subject for all students until the end of Year 11.  During Key Stage 3 students follow a course covering core concepts from biology, chemistry and physics.  Following the National Tests in Year 9, students move on to follow a more advanced course leading to one or two GCSEs.  Both these courses still include topics from all three fields; biology, chemistry and physics.  The vast majority of students will follow the Double Award course leading to two GCSEs.

Beyond GCSE science courses become optional and it is possible to study biology, chemistry and physics separately without study the other areas.  A large number of students staying on to sixth form will follow a scientific course.
